Abstract

Cleft lips and palates are the commonest abnormalities in the craniofacial region. Their etiology is multifactorial and involves environmental and genetic factors. A systematic review of the literature was done to evaluate any relationship between tobacco and alcoholic drink use and cleft lips and palates. Materials and Methods: The PubMed database was searched. Eleven articles were selected, of which five dealt with the role of tobacco and seven the influence of alcohol on the development of clefts.
