Abstract
The God who fought the battles of Israel and rewarded her virtue by establishing the people upon the land he promised them was called the God of The belief that Israel was a community bound under covenant to fulfill God's purpose and was promised sustenance and security was basic to OT theology and was continued in the NT. This chapter examines the close relationship between the existence in community under God's providential care and life. This is done by illustrating various metaphorical usages of the word in Israelite, Jewish, Samaritan, and Christian literature. Existence in covenant relationship with God and his chosen people was called in the OT, and this religious meaning of life was continued in the NT.
