Abstract

Life Story Work represents the development of values in the importance of understanding history in the continuing self-esteem of an individual. This study reports such work for people with learning disabilities showing it to reap benefits for individuals living in a hospital setting. It provided the opportunity for people to express their unique individuality, their needs and desires and has provided a fuller understanding of the person. It also provided a useful tool for client/carer interaction and communication. The team involved has discovered many ways in which Life Story Work can be presented, to enable individuals to access their Life Story according to the skills they possess. A voice on a tape, a video, a book of photographs or a comprehensive written book are some of the ideas that have evolved from this work.
