Abstract

On 14 November, 1963, a volcanic eruption started on the ocean floor off the south coast of Iceland, resulting in the formation of an island from a depth of 120 m. The island was named Surtsey. Even before volcanic activity subsided life began to establish itself and the way in which it has done so in the intervening nineteen years is of great biological interest.
