Abstract

Ghazlan Power Plant Engineering in conjuction with a general contractor, ABB Combustion Engineering, conducted a successful study which evaluated the existing and remaining life and condition of the boiler, and established guidelines for an in‐house inspection programme of the boiler and auxiliary system components. The detailed analysis consisted of evaluating water treatment and steam purity practices, and metallurgically analysing tube material samples of the superheat, reheat and economizer sections of the boiler. In addition, several non‐destructive examination (NDE) methods (magnetic particle examination, ultrasound shear wave examination, bore‐scope, and plastic replication of metal surface) were utilized to determine the integrity and rate of deterioration of the tube material and associated support structures. On the basis of the test results, a scheduled monitoring and inspection programme has been established, and is currently being implemented on all Ghazlan boilers and associated system components. It is expected that the programme will significantly minimize unscheduled and costly outages of the boilers.
