Abstract
This chapter details Saw Ralph's life as a soldier rising through the ranks of the Karen army. It discusses training and logistics as well as Saw Ralph's journey to becoming a lieutenant colonel. The chapter also compares and contrasts the Karen and Burmese soldiers, describing their respective motivations and the tactics they generally employed. “We didn't have any rest time away from army life,” Saw Ralph writes, depicting the soldier's life as one of constant movement. And as he continued to go on the move, hostilities escalated between the Karen and Burmese with the assassination of the Karen National Union (KNU) president Saw Ba U Gyi in 1950.
