Liesing Creek – Sewerage and Wastewater Treatment in the Context of River Restoration in Southern Vienna, Austria

Abstract

Liesing Creek is situated in the south of Vienna/Austria. At present, it is a channelised Creek emerging in the mountainous Vienna woods, and as soon as it hits the Southern Vienna Plains, it also enters a densely populated urban area. There is a citizen movement to reshape Liesing Creek from its present channelised condition into a restored “near-natural” rivulet. Liesing Creek is also receiving the flow from a large WWTP (Blumental), some combined runoff (after in-line storage) as well as the surface runoff from the dominating separate sewer system.
