Abstract

The theme of this text is the History of Music Education in Brazil in the Nineteenth-century. His rationale is to present some data that allow discussing the consolidated memory that commonly takes this theme as a synonym of the project organized by Villa-Lobos, with choral music in public schools in the 1930s and 1940s, in spite of any past, contemporary or later historical experiences. Thus, the objective of this paper is to bring some results of research accomplished about the Lessons and the Masters of Music from College Pedro II (1838-1858) as counterpoints that allow analyzing the importance of their teaching in schools in Nineteenth-century and reflecting upon the research on the History of Music Education in Brazil.

Resumo: O tema desse texto será a História da Educação Musical no Brasil, no século XIX. Sua justificativa é apresentar alguns dados que permitam problematizar a ‘Memória’ consolidada que, comumente, toma esse tema como sinônimo do projeto realizado por Villa-Lobos, com o Canto Orfeônico nos anos de 1930 e 1940, a despeito de quaisquer outras experiências históricas anteriores, contemporâneas e posteriores. O objetivo deste texto, é trazer, portanto, alguns resultados da pesquisa realizada sobre as ‘Lições’ e os mestres de música do Colégio Pedro II (1838-1858) como contrapontos que permitam se analisar a importância de seu ensino nas escolas já no século XIX e se pensar sobre a pesquisa da história da educação musical no Brasil.
