Abstract

Digitalis glycosides are used control ventricular rate in atrial fibrillation or in advanced heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. There is a bottleneck for digitoxin supply until 2023. Thus, the indications for treatment with Digitalis glycosides should be (re-)evaluated in each case. If there is an indication for treatment with Digitalis, digoxin can be used. As digoxin elimination relies much more on kidney function than digitoxin, overdosing can occur more frequently, especially when renal function worsens. Thus, circulating digoxin levels should be determined more frequently, and lower digoxin dosages should be used in patients with renal insufficiency.
