Abstract

Abstract EMS workers typically do not receive training on empathy and compassion, yet these skills are highly valued by patients at their most vulnerable. Alessio and Lidia, from Italy, were on a cross country honeymoon trip when Lidia died suddenly, leaving Alessio alone and frightened. Jason, a flight nurse and emergency room nurse, demonstrated empathy while assisting Alessio through the difficult tasks of returning Lidia's body to Italy, navigating the legal paperwork and providing grief support with a language barrier. In just 72 hours together, a bond was forged that transcended obstacles and led to a friendship and sweet reunion. Professionalism does not preclude the demonstration of empathy and compassion, but enhances the human connection so vital for true “caregivers”.
