Abstract

Abstractα‐Sulfonyl deoxybenzoines are formed by the reaction of desylchloride with sodium arylsulfinates in good preparative yields. The photolysis of these compounds proceeds with quantum yields of about Φin = 0.50. Compared to other photoinitiators, α‐sulfonyl deoxybenzoines polymerize methylmethacrylate in acetonitrile solution with moderate polymerization quantum yields only. On the contrary, the yellowing of cured polyester resins using these compounds as photoinitiators is much smaller.
