Abstract

1. 1. Ten unusual cases of lichen planus which developed in the Southwest Pacific Area are herewith presented. 2. 2. The term “lichen planus hypertrophicus, retiformis” is suggested as a proper diagnosis for the first nine cases. 3. 3. Though the cause of this disease remains obscure, the present study suggests that climate plus individual (constitutional) susceptibility may be of basic importance in the pathogenesis. Suspicions as to possible sensitizing factors are considered too speculative to mention. Irritation by external physical agents apparently constitutes an important precipitating factor in the disease process.
