Abstract

The chapter explores the narrative of exceptionality of the Catholic-Polish nation in the eyes of God, in a reality in which the Church needs to justify its own diminishing authority. Focus is laid on the sanctuary in Lichen, famous for its huge new basilica. The site presents the Polish Catholic Church as fundamentally tied with the Polish nation. It attracts visitors by mixing faux-baroque architecture and painting with familiar folk-like art, which are used to present the role of the Church as key in the historical victories of the Polish nation. However, to accommodate visitors, the site offers non-religious features—from playgrounds to New Year’s Eve parties.
