Abstract

It is self-evident to people in the dance world that dances are works in their own right. However, from an American library perspective, this fact was not fully acknowledged until twenty years ago, when the Library of Congress published cataloging instructions that finally treated “choreographic works” as autonomous entities. Still, these instructions may seem to neglect the role of the choreographer as creator. The latest developments in cataloging will have a dramatic—and beneficial—impact on the way dance works are described and discovered through library catalogs in the near future.
