Abstract
Abstract The article presents the library system of the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, structure and functioning of the library system of Illinois, education and training of library staff and academic librarians` status and promotion. The author points out also some current dilemmas of public and school libraries in Illinois, which are connected with the problem of intellectual freedom and free access to information, as that of internet filtering, free access to information for minors, library acquisition policy, library buildings and premises, etc.
