Abstract

Report on a survey of libraries of independent schools in the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC). Covers funding, staffing, management of libraries, services/resources and access to them, and performance. Results are compared to those of the 1997 Library Association/Sheffield Hallam survey of all types of secondary school, and to other surveys of independent schools libraries. On most fronts HMC schools compared favourably, but some serious problem areas were identified, notably the lack of an integrated management structure for the libraries, the low emphasis given to performance, and minimal staffing.
