Abstract

The International Carthusian Congress, which convened from 28 August until 1 September 2006, was held in honour of James Hogg, the founder and active editor of the Analecta Cartusiana. Hogg has probably done more than anyone else to further the study of the Carthusian order in modern times. There are over fifty separate contributions in these five (soon to be six) volumes, which contain many illustrations, particularly of Hogg and the international congresses over the years. From this large collection of papers, and other items submitted by scholars, the following contributions highlight the quality and scope of the material in this entire publication. In volume 1, Margrit Früh has written a paper on a beautifully illustrated seventeenth-century liturgical manuscript, produced by an unknown monk from the charterhouse of Ittingen (Switzerland). She has provided twenty-nine coloured photographs, which mainly illustrate historiated initials in the manuscript. Rudolf van Dijk’s paper concerns the reception of the Imitatio Christi among the Carthusians and, in particular, its relationship to eucharistic spirituality. This includes a list of manuscripts of this influential spiritual work which are known to be of Carthusian provenance, including surviving copies from the English charterhouses of Witham (Somerset) and Sheen (Surrey). John Clark studies the influence of Carthusian authors upon the English spiritual author Dom Augustine Baker, OSB (d. 1641). While Baker drew from a variety of sources in his spiritual teaching, we find that he refers to the writings of Carthusian authors such as Lanspergius, Antonius de Molina, and Dionysius the Carthusian (d. 1471). Baker followed the mistaken attribution of labelling Walter Hilton (d. 1396), the author of The Scale of Perfection, as a Carthusian: he was, in fact, an Augustinian canon.
