Abstract

Abstract Li10Zn4O9 was synthesized by solid state reaction of the binary oxides. Li10Zn4O9 crystallizes tetragonal (P42/nmc, a = 972.63(3) pm, c = 465.01(2) pm, V = 439.91(3) · 106 pm3, Z = 2, conventional R = 6.34%). Crystals of Li10Zn4O9 always contain additional small amounts of Li6ZnO4 as intergrowths, and show a complex systematic twinning. Li10Zn4O9 crystallizes as an ordered defect-variant of the Li2O-structure (anti-CaF2 type) with the oxygen anions forming a slightly distorted cubic close packing with the Li+-ions and the Zn2+-ions occupying tetrahedral sites in an ordered manner. The vacant tetrahedral sites establish defect-clusters with the Zn2+-ions. The twinning is determined by the structural relationship to the Li2O-structure.
