Abstract
Background: Disparities in health based on sexual orientation and gender identity are well documented. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) youth have poor health outcomes compared to their heterosexual counterparts, including higher rates of bullying, harassment and violence. They also are at a higher risk for mental health illnesses, substance abuse, smoking and sexually transmitted infections. The AAP recommends active discussions with adolescents in regards to their sexuality.
