Abstract

Lexical phonology is a theory about the organization of the phonological and morphological modules of grammar. It presupposes the traditional distinction between word phonology and phrasal phonology, and proposes that phonology and morphology apply in tandem. Hence, it is a theory about the interface between phonology and morphology. The theory of lexical phonology has been formulated within the framework of rule-based, derivational phonology. Its basic insights can be carried over to constraint-based theories of phonology.
