Abstract

Introduction: Lewy body dementia or LBD (also called Lewy body variant of Alzheimer's disease or diffuse Lewy body disease) is characterized clinically by extrapyramidal symptoms, behavioral disturbances, and a relatively rapid progression of dementia. The authors examined the prevalence and characteristics of LBD in a new university-based geriatric psychiatry inpatient unit. Methods: A new geriatric psychiatry inpatient unit was opened 1 year ago. At least one of the authors was directly responsible for the care of every one of the patients admitted.
