Abstract

Background Early identification of heart failure as a post-myocardial infarction is very important in a clinical setting. A study was planned to determine the levels of N-terminal NT-pro- Brain Natriuretic Peptide BNP in systolic heart failure consequential to ischaemic heart disease and to find out the risk factors in those patients.Material and methods The levels of NT-pro-BNP was determined in 100 patients admitted to Basaveshwar Teaching and General Hospital Kalaburagi with a diagnosis of systolic heart failure having an ejection fractionlt40 subsequent to ischaemic heart disease. Results The levels of NT-pro-BNP ranged between 358 pgml and 3000 pgml with a mean value of 2049 pgml and a median value of 1886 pgml. Conclusions NT-pro-BNP level had a good predictive value for heart failure p-0.03nbsp
