Abstract
A multi-level, multi-tiered approach to the labelling of speech recordings is proposed. Five levels of segmental labelling are defined, at differing degrees of abstraction with reference to the physical speech signal, ranging from the physical level of acoustic parameters to the segmental sound structure of the citation forms of the words in the utterance. The issue of prosodic labelling is also addressed and related to the levels suggested for segmental labelling.
