AbstractThe Levellers fought to protect freeborn Englishmen from arbitrary power. Their Presbyterian and Independent opponents called them “Levellers” because they aimed to “level” property distinctions. The Levellers, however, denied this accusation and claimed they supported private property rights. The “Diggers” who favored property redistribution some years later identified themselves as the “True Levellers.”
