Abstract

1. 1. Free β-alanine, a soluble-bound form of β-alanine, N-β-alanyldopamine (NBAD) and dopamine in haemolymph and wings were determined during the pupal stage. 2. 2. In haemolymph, free β-alanine showed a high peak at the stage of wing-pigmentation, while NBAD showed only a low peak at the same stage. Dopamine in haemolymph was on a low level throughout the pupal stage. 3. 3. In wings, free β-alanine showed a low peak at the stage of wing-pigmentation, while a large amount of soluble-bound β-alanine accumulated up to immediately before emergence corresponding to the accumulation of pale yellow pigment. NBAD showed a high peak at the stage of wing-pigmentation and then decreased to a very low level immediately before emergence. Dopamine showed a peak as the wing-pigmentation neared the end and then rapidly decreased.
