Abstract

Objective To detect the serum receptor-binding cancer antigen expressed on SiSo cells(RCAS1)in patients with esophageal carcinoma, and to investigate the effects of operation on it. Methods Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) was used to detect the level of serum RCAS1 in 64 cases of esophageal carcinoma and 30 cases of normal controls, and the serum RCAS1 leves were compared in 40 cases of esophageal carcinoma before and after operation. Results The levels of serum RCAS1 were elevated in all subgroups of patients with esophageal carcinoma[(38.89± 13.00) U/ml] compared to the controls[(15.59±4.41) U/ml, P< 0.01]. Serum RCAS1 was not correlated with sex, age, and histological grade of patients with esophageal carcinoma, but with clinical stage. The serum RCAS1 level in stageⅣ[(61.21±5.32) U/ml] was higher than that in comparison with stage Ⅲ[(47.33±3.72) U/ml, P< 0.01]. Serum RACS1 level in stage Ⅲ was higher than that in stage Ⅱ[(36.28±4.81) U/ml, P< 0.01], that in stage Ⅱ higher than that in stageⅠ[(22.47 ±5.77) U/ml, P<0.01],and that in stageⅠhigher than that in normal controls(P< 0.05). The serum RCAS1 levels were remarkably reduced in patients with esophageal carcinoma after operation (P<0.01). Conclusion The serum RCAS1 is closely correlated with the malignant degree and prognosis in esophageal carcinoma. Key words: Esophageal carcinoma; Receptor-binding cancer antigen; Surgery
