Abstract

The present study aimed to outline the profile of the individuals affected by intestinal parasites and identify areas of greatest risk in the zone of the Prado Family Health Program team. This is a cross-sectional study realized from August 2009 to August 2010, using data from medical records and from the Brazilian Primary Care Information System (SIAB). The age group 0-10 years (48.5%) showed the largest number of infected individuals, females (53.4%) were the most affected, and the major focus area was Area 3 (20.4%). In addition, the basic sanitation system in the study area was considered satisfactory. This research suggests that the high number of cases is related to bad hygiene habits in the population. We concluded that educational activities are valid and that they need to be integrated into a continuous process of education for the control of intestinal parasites.
