Abstract

A study of the utilization of leukocyte-poor, washed red blood cells (LPWRBC) during an eight-year period demonstrates indications for use of this blood component. A significant decrease in the incidence of transfusion reactions was noted when LPWRBC were used. In addition, the decrease in cellular and metabolic waste products, as well as the decrease in plasma potassium, makes the product ideal for transfusion of newborns, for transfusion of patients with hyperkalemia, and for multiply transfused patients.
