Abstract

The genus Leucobacter consists of 25 species of Gram-positive, irregular, rod-shaped bacteria. Members of this genus have been isolated from both aquatic and terrestrial environments, including activated sludge, the rhizosphere, the murine nasal cavity, bovine rumen and nematodes. Metagenomic analysis has revealed that Leucobacter species have a global distribution and an extremely diverse niche breadth that spans free-living and host-associated microbiota (Figure 1). Leucobacter species may be parasitic, but they can also be protective for their hosts.
