Abstract

Dr. Froehlich comments as follows: There are several reasons for the apparent higher mortality rate in our population compared to those cited. 1. As was indicated in the footnote of Table I, our mortality rate includes not only perinatal deaths but also infant deaths. 2. Our population consists of 46% blacks, 46% whites, and 8% Puerto Ricans and other races.1 The general United States population consists of about 10% to 11% blacks. 3. Except for one institution (University of Buffalo) our study population consists of clinic patients.1
