Abstract

The report of a study of 47 children by Freeman et al1 indicated administration of carnitine did not significantly improve symptoms associated with the anticonvulsant medications valproic acid and carbamazepine. Further study has been recommended to validate the clinical impression of some workers that therapeutic carnitine may be beneficial for some patients with low carnitine levels.2 Recent experience at a large residential training and treatment center for the mentally retarded provides further pertinent information. At Southside Virginia Training Center for the mentally retarded in Petersburg, Virginia, 40% of the residents received anticonvulsant medication for epilepsy.
