Abstract

Pope et al have concerns about the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Infectious Diseases recommendation for using ribavirin in RSV patients who are mechanically ventilated. The Committee based these recommendations not only on the study published by Smith et al, but also on observations on individual patients in clinical situations where experienced care-takers have reported favorable clinical outcomes and safety. Sources included members of the Committee, the Food and Drug Administration, the pharmaceutical manufacturer, a National Institutes of Health panel of scientists, and reviewers and representatives from the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.
