Abstract

Drs Bess and Paradise are to be commended on their timely, intelligent, and well-informed response1 to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Consensus Statement2 that advocates universal screening for infant hearing impairment. I share their concerns and have been arguing along similar lines since the release of the statement. It is lamentable that so many of the recommendations we make as dinicians involved in the care and habilitation of children with permanently impaired hearing are based on theoretical assumptions, anecdotal evidence, and impressions informed by "clinical experience."
