Abstract

We applaud recent efforts by Dr. Elkbuli et al. in analyzing sets of popliteal arterial injury (PAI) data from the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) to elucidate variables that can predict or indicate negative outcomes.1 To compare with the landmark NTDB PAI study by Dr. Mullenix et al., Elkbuli et al. sought out the association between teaching hospital status and patient outcome by analyzing 1120 PAI. They concluded no significant difference in amputation rate nor mortality rate between patients treated at nonteaching hospitals, community teaching hospitals, or university teaching hospitals with adjusting for age, gender, race, Injury Severity Score, Abbreviated Injury Score, insurance status, comorbid conditions, and smoking.
