Abstract

A transcription of a letter issued by James II offering his protection to Nicholas Georgiades, a Greek man who arrived in Scotland in 1459 to gather charitable donations to ransom his brother from the Turkish forces who had taken Constantinople in 1453. The author then goes on to discuss evidence of other Greek refugees that arrived in Scotland under the reign of James II and the case of the younger son of a Scottish noble family who was ransomed by his father after he unexpectedly became the heir to a castle.
