Abstract

Recent data (Hall, 1974) suggests that the OER of neutrons produced by deuterons on 9Be maintains a value around 1·6 for deuteron energies above 20 MeV. However, there is a possibility of a reduction in OER at higher neutron energies because of increased contributions to the absorbed dose in tissue from neutron reactions with carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen relative to n-p reactions. We report here the results of two experiments using 80 MeV deuterons striking a thick 9Be target to produce neutrons for the irradiation of Vicia faba bean roots to determine OER.
