Giardia lamblia is a poorly understood organism whose epidemiology is becoming even more confused because we do not fully understand its biology. Brady and Wolfe (1) present a case in a 44-year-old woman and conclude that the source of infection was water stored in an underground cistern.Although there is no doubt thatGiardiacysts can survive in water, as we showed years ago in our experimental studies with prisoner volunteers (2), I am unconvinced that the cistern was the source of infection in this case....
