Abstract

This field report describes the author's trip to the Balkans from the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) on a peace-building mission. The trip occurred six weeks after Kosovo declared its sovereignty from Serbia. Reflecting on the history of the region, the author describes the effort of public officials, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and citizens of both countries to come to terms with trauma and with identity-based conflict.
