Abstract

In recent years there have been several investigations on the effect of external irradiation on the ability of thyroid cells to undergo cell division (Greig et al., 1970; Malone, et al., 1974; Walinder and Sjoden, 1971). Assessment of capacity for cell division in thyroid cells, usually involves subjecting the gland to a goitrogenic challenge, which promotes cell division. Goitrogenic challenge is achieved by prolonged drug administration, or iodine deprivation, leading to reduced blood thyroid hormone levels, which because of a feedback mechanism through the pituitary gland causes the thyroid to come under increasing thyrotrophic hormone stimulation (TSH). This stimulation causes the size of the gland and the cell number to increase.
