Abstract
To the Editor. —Recently, the staff of the Spokane Eye Clinic has become aware of an unusual corneal change that has occurred among some patients who have been wearing the Bausch and Lomb Soflens. This corneal change is characterized by a mottled bluish-gray discoloration of the posterior cornea at the level of Descemet membrane and perhaps endothelium. This discoloration has the appearance of an interstitial precipitate, usually involves the upper third of the cornea, and is more dense peripherally. This discoloration has been noted in patients initially after 9 to 26 months of wear and has not yet been reversible in at least three patients who have discontinued use of the lenses for several months. At this point there has been no measurable visual loss in any patient, and usually the finding has been noted incidentally in asymptomatic patients.
