Abstract

The general listening rates of radio broadcasting and listeners habits are examined and questioned carefully inside the contemporary diversified communication field. Within the case of Turkey the listening rates and forms of TRT should be questioned inside the field of media where high rates of competition are remained. This is important because the existence of public radio as a balancing element is perceived to be necessary. Where the economic conditions and competition between the broadcasting companies are considered to be the preservation of the public broadcasting to posterity the role of the institutions that give communication education becomes important. Within the given context the main problem of this study is to determine how are public radio broadcasting perceived and the position of TRT in the given field in between communication faculties and students. A survey is applied in the study in order to determine the opinions of target listeners about the listening rates, the preferences about the public radio, the purposes of public radio listening, the views about the language used in TRT and the position of TRT in the competing field. The data gathered as a result of this study indicates that a high rate of communication faculty and the students are listening the radio and as a choice of public listening TRT is listened relatively more than private radios. When the same comparison is made concerning the television rates the viewing rates are decreased against the case of TRT. The target listeners confirm that TRT radio provides much more information, entertainment and qualified broadcasting. Also they find TRT as more sufficient in the usage of Turkish as native language.
