Abstract
The Omnibus Trade and Competitive Act of 1988 (P.L. 100418) declares the International System of Units, abbreviated, SI, the preferred measurement system in the United States. This act marks the third attempt since 1866 to promote the metric system in the United States. While metric conversion for the general public still remains entirely voluntary, some voluntary aspects were removed for federal agencies. Federal construction has had to use metric units since the end of fiscal year 1992. Various engineering and scientific associations now give the SI preference over the inch‐pound system, relegating the inch‐pound units into parentheses. The handwriting is on the wall for their total disappearance.
