Abstract
The article discusses a series of usability studies on indexes from a systems engineering and human factors perspective. The purpose of these studies is to establish a set of user requirements that indexes need to satisfy. The results f om the first set of studies are presented and suggestions made as to how these can be applied to improve the usability and quality of indexes.
