Abstract

Typhoon Morakot landed on the Taiwan Island on 7th August 2009 and unprecedented heavy rains continued for four days. The damage caused was also unprecedented. With a fatality of 675 deaths, Morakot is ranked the most fatal typhoon in the history of Taiwan. Damage was heavy along the Chen Yo Lan, Lao Non, Chi Shan Creeks and in the Alishan and Tai Dong Areas. The most tragic event occurred at Shiao Lin Village where a huge landslide buried many communities and claimed 491 lives. Geotechnical societies formed a team of volunteers to investigate the damage made and the results obtained are discussed herein with emphasis on landslides and debris flows.
