Lessons from a Rose: Sociological Reflections on Eight Years of Long-Term Care

Abstract

As aging Americans expand in unprecedented numbers and need for health care, much attention is focused on state and federal policies and legislation, growing corporate/conglomerate control of elder care, efficiency of operation, and cost control. Too often, the individual experience is lost. Rose, an elder individual with dementia, is observed through eight years of an ongoing participant observation study by her son, a sociologist who assists in her care. The study argues for research on the fact and consequences of ageism in doctors. Certified nursing aides/assistants (CNAs) are seen as a critical and growing challenge to providers and receivers of nursing home care. Breaking with common assumptions, quality of life for many aging dementia patients can be joyous and fulfilling. Family involvement can have extraordinarily positive effects on the nursing home patient.
