Abstract

Sediment recycling is an important factor in many current models of global geochemical evolution1–4. Identification of a sedimentary component in the products of island arc magmatism is therefore of interest in evaluating such models. New isotopic data presented here for Martinique, in the Lesser Antilles island arc, span an exceptionally wide range of ratios which is consistent with a large contribution from continentally derived sediments. This contamination has produced the highest 87Sr/86Sr, 206,207,208Pb/204Pb and lowest 143Nd/144Nd reported from an intra-oceanic arc. Data from other islands of the Lesser Antilles suggest that the incorporation of subducted sedimentary material is variable in extent along the arc, reaching a maximum in the vicinity of Martinique.
