Abstract
Six senior midwifery posts are being axed by Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Trust in an attempt to save cash. The Royal College of Midwives claimed a postnatal ward would now be left with only one qualified midwife to care for 18 mothers and babies. RCM Senior Industrial Relations Officer Barbara Shepherd said there would note be less qualified staff caring for more deliveries. 'The moves will make the situation intolerable, ' she added. A Trust spokesperson confirmed seven posts were to be cut - six in senior grades - as part of a rationalisation plan adopted by Guy's managers before the recent merger with St Thomas'.
