Abstract

THE TWO Presidential candidates' health care proposals are painted, in broad brush, as less vs more. Less is promised by an administration that just instituted the most massive medical pricing system in US history, that is accused of micromanaging medicine through a maze of Medicare rules, and that now wants new controls at the National Institutes of Health aimed at steering researchers toward economically advantageous projects. More is the message from a governor who promises to limit overall health care spending, cut off tax deductions for health insurance that goes beyond the basics, and make small businesses buy insurance that some say they cannot afford. Meanwhile, his state's health department is being sued by his state's medical society, miffed that Medicaid payments were cut in Arkansas without the conscientious consultation with physician leaders that the governor had stressed when seeking a health care provider tax.
