Abstract

The 2001 Large Engineering Systems Conference on Power Engineering (LESCOPE 2001) will take place 11-13 July 2001 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and is cosponsored by the IEEE Power Engineering Society. This follows the successful launch of three earlier LESCOPE conferences beginning in 1998. The Greater Halifax Area welcomes the conference to its famous shores, and hopes you have the opportunity to visit and enjoy its many attractions. We invite you to join engineers from around the world as they share ideas, thoughts, and findings in all areas of electric power engineering. Technical Program The technical program is designed to offer an international forum for participants to share knowledge, experience, and new ideas and to discuss recent developments and practical applications in power engineering. Such topics are related to new developments in the application, operating experience, field testing, theory, design, control, and analysis, in all areas of power engineering. The meeting will begin on Wednesday, 11 July, with registration and a reception affording you the opportunity to join old friends and make new ones as you enjoy the view of the famous Bedford Basin. The technical portion of the meeting will begin with the Plenary Session on Thursday morning and continue through Friday with more than 20 panel and paper sessions involving industrial and academic speakers from over 18 countries. The conference features a number of half-day tutorials on state of the art in computational intelligence in power systems, power quality, and distribution system planning. There will be a harbor cruise and the conference banquet on Thursday evening. The conference luncheon will be held on Friday. Location and Facilities Halifax is the capital of Nova Scotia and the largest urban center in Atlantic Canada, the business, educational and cultural center of the region. Halifax, founded in 1749 by Col. Edward Cornwallis, was named in honor of the second Earl of Halifax and president of the Board of Trade and Plantations at that time. Halifax was chosen for its superb strategic location; its deep, ice-free natural harbor has offered excellent port facilities and support to commercial and naval shipping ever since. Its history has been varied and interesting. More information about our beautiful area is on the Web, http://explore.gov.ns.ca/tourism/trails/metro/hfxdart.htm. The conference will be held at the Sheraton Halifax Hotel, which is known as a unique urban resort situated on the harbor front and in the heart of downtown. The downtown Link provides climate-controlled access to over 130 boutiques, shops, and restaurants, banking and parking, and entertainment hot spots. The hotel is in close proximity to Halifax’s only casino.
