Abstract

Lesbian feminism describes a set of theories, practices, and writings emerging in the 1970s and 1980s in the United States from the specific viewpoint of homosexual women. Lesbian feminism critically examines the role of women and particularly lesbians in heterosexist patriarchal society, challenging male dominance and heteronormativity as well as oppressions like sexism and homophobia. Lesbian feminism emerged at the time of and related to the second‐wave feminist movement and the gay liberation movement. Lesbian feminist organizing included the creation of women‐centered spaces, the fostering of bonds between women, protests and demonstrations, and lesbian separatism. Writings by lesbian feminists critique patriarchy, misogyny, and gender roles and outline theoretical positions that denaturalize heterosexuality.
